What to Expect After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is an effective treatment for cataracts, which are clouding of the natural lens in your eye that can make it harder to see clearly.

Before cataract surgery, though, you should know what to expect both during and after the procedure. If you’re considering cataract surgery, use this guide to prepare yourself so you can have the best experience possible!

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is an operation performed on the cloudy lens of the eye. This results in loss of vision. Cataract surgery is designed to replace the old lens with an artificial lens. People who have cataracts may experience blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and glare.

Common side effects of cataract surgery

The most common side effects people face after cataract surgery is dryness.  Vision can be slightly blurry for a few days after surgery, but this is temporary. Some patients may experience redness, itching, and swelling around the eye during the initial healing process.

How long will it take for your vision to return?

Most patients' vision improves within a few days after cataract surgery. It's common for people who've had cataract surgery to experience some blurry vision immediately after surgery, but that should go away in a few days.

When can you drive again?

It can be tempting to ask your doctor how soon you can drive after cataract surgery. But it’s not that simple, and would depend on your vision.  Typically a patient can drive to their post operative appointment the next day.  However, if a patient is not comfortable with their vision, they should not drive.

When can you bend over again?

Typically the answer is in the next day or two after surgery.  Every surgery is a little different and your doctor will give you more details immediately following the procedure.  Most people can be resuming normal physical activity within two days of their cataract surgery.
