How to Prevent Sun Damage to Eyes
As an ophthalmologist, I often see patients with sun-related damage to their eyes. Whether it’s cataracts or macular degeneration, sun exposure can have serious consequences for our eyes. Here are some tips to help prevent sun damage to the eyes.
Wear sunglasses:
The most important step you can take to protect your eyes from the sun is to wear sunglasses. Look for glasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays, as these are the two types of harmful rays that can reach the eyes. It’s also a good idea to choose lenses that are polarized, as they reduce glare, which can be especially helpful when driving or engaging in water activities.
Choose a hat:
In addition to wearing sunglasses, consider wearing a hat to protect your eyes from the sun. A wide-brimmed hat will provide additional protection, especially for the delicate skin around the eyes.
Limit time in the sun:
While it’s important to enjoy time outside, it’s also important to limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you have to be outside during these hours, try to find shade or wear a hat and sunglasses.
Be aware of UV-blocking contact lenses:
If you wear contact lenses, be aware that not all lenses offer UV protection. Be sure to ask your eye doctor about lenses that block both UVA and UVB rays to provide the best protection for your eyes.
Use sunscreen:
Just like you protect your skin from sun damage, it’s also important to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply as necessary, especially if you are sweating or swimming.
Avoid looking directly at the sun:
It’s never safe to look directly at the sun, even during a solar eclipse. This can cause permanent damage to your eyes and lead to a condition called solar retinopathy.
Check your medications:
Some medications can make your eyes more sensitive to the sun. If you are taking any medications, be sure to talk to your eye doctor about any precautions you should take.
Get regular eye exams:
Finally, be sure to get regular eye exams. Your eye doctor can check for any signs of sun damage, such as cataracts or macular degeneration, and advise you on how to prevent further damage. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your eye doctor for personalized advice and guidance.
