Can Exercising Improve Eyesight?

As an ophthalmologist, I often see patients who are concerned about maintaining good eye health. While there are many things that can contribute to eye health, participating in physical activity is helpful. In this blog post, Iā€™d like to discuss some of the ways that exercise can benefit your eyes, and why it is an important part of a comprehensive eye care plan.

Exercise can improve circulation and reduce stress on the eyes

One of the key ways that exercise can benefit the eyes is by improving circulation. When we exercise, we increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, including the eyes. Additionally, exercise can also help to lower blood pressure, which is another important factor in maintaining good eye health.

Exercise may improve visual acuity

Visual acuity, or the ability to see fine details, can decline with age or as a result of certain eye conditions. However, research has shown that exercise may help improve visual acuity.

Exercise may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. While there is no cure for this condition, there is evidence to suggest that exercise may reduce the risk of developing it, in certain populations.

Exercise may improve visual processing speed

Visual processing speed, or the speed at which the brain processes visual information, can decline with age. Some research has shown that exercise can help to improve visual processing speed.

Exercise can improve overall eye health

Exercise can help to improve overall cardiovascular health, which can be beneficial for the eyes, since many eye conditions are related to poor cardiovascular health.  Additionally regular physical exercise and weight loss can help prevent the development of Type II diabetes which can affect the eyes.

In conclusion, exercise is an important part of a comprehensive eye care plan. If you are not already incorporating regular exercise into your routine, now is the time to start. Whether you prefer a leisurely walk, a vigorous workout at the gym, or something in between, there is an exercise that is right for you and that can benefit your eyes.
